Yarn Yardage Converter

Convert leftover yarn weight into estimated yards or meters using the numbers printed on your skein label. Handy for stash checks, partial skeins, and project planning.

Convert yarn weight to yardage

Enter your label yardage and label weight, then weigh the yarn you have.

How to use the yarn yardage converter

  1. Find the original skein label. Enter the yardage or meterage and the skein weight.
  2. Weigh your leftover ball, cake, or partial skein on a kitchen scale.
  3. Use the estimate to compare against your pattern's required yardage.

The formula

Yards remaining = yarn weight you have × label yards ÷ label weight.

The same formula works for meters. This page also converts grams and ounces so you can mix a metric scale with a US yarn label.

Good uses and limits

This is best for estimating leftover yarn from the same yarn listed on the label. It is not a universal conversion from yarn weight category to yardage, because bulky wool, cotton, alpaca, chainette, and sock yarn can all have different yardage at the same weight.

FAQ

How many yards are in 50 grams of yarn?

It depends on the yarn. If the label says 100 grams equals 220 yards, then 50 grams is about 110 yards. If the label says 100 grams equals 437 yards, then 50 grams is about 219 yards.

How do I convert yarn ounces to yards?

Enter the label weight in ounces if the label uses ounces, or choose ounces for the yarn you have if your scale uses ounces. The converter handles the gram and ounce conversion.

Should I add extra yardage for a project?

Yes. Patterns, gauge, swatching, tails, seaming, and yarn joins can all use extra yarn. When a project is close, treat this as an estimate and keep a cushion.
