How much applesauce replaces oil?
Start with an equal-volume swap: 1 cup oil equals about 1 cup applesauce. Since oil is pure fat and applesauce is mostly fruit and water, the result can be less rich and a little denser. If the recipe is new to you, replacing half the oil first is a good low-risk test.
Where applesauce works best
Applesauce swaps are usually easiest in muffins, banana bread, pumpkin bread, carrot cake, snack cakes, pancakes, and some brownies. It is less reliable in crisp cookies, pie crust, fried foods, and recipes where oil is the main source of richness.
Oil and applesauce substitution FAQ
Can I substitute applesauce for oil in cake mix?
Yes. Use the same amount of unsweetened applesauce as the oil listed on the box. For a richer cake, replace only half the oil with applesauce and keep the other half as oil.
How much applesauce replaces 1/2 cup oil?
Use about 1/2 cup applesauce for 1/2 cup oil. That is 8 tablespoons, 24 teaspoons, about 122 grams, or about 118 milliliters.
Does applesauce change the taste?
Usually only a little, especially in spiced or fruit-based bakes. Plain vanilla cakes may taste slightly fruitier and less rich.
Should I reduce sugar when using applesauce?
If you use unsweetened applesauce, you usually do not need to change sugar. If your applesauce is sweetened, reduce sugar slightly if the recipe is already sweet.
Can I use applesauce instead of butter?
You can replace some melted butter with applesauce in muffin and quick bread recipes, but butter also adds flavor and structure. For butter-specific swaps, use the butter to oil converter first, then decide whether applesauce fits the recipe.
