Cross Stitch Fabric Count Calculator
Convert a pattern stitch count into finished design size and fabric cut size for Aida, linen, evenweave, over-one, or over-two stitching.
Calculate fabric size
How to use the cross stitch fabric calculator
- Enter the chart width and height in stitches from your pattern.
- Enter the fabric count printed on your Aida, linen, or evenweave.
- Choose over-one for Aida or one-thread stitching, or over-two for linen/evenweave stitched across two threads.
- Add the border you want on each side for framing, finishing, or hoop clearance.
The result shows the stitched design size and the fabric piece to cut. If your fabric is sold in centimeters, switch the unit selector and the same inputs convert instantly.
Useful formulas
Effective count: fabric count ÷ threads crossed.
Design width: stitches wide ÷ effective count.
Fabric cut width: design width + border × 2.
Common examples
14-count Aida stitched over one gives 14 stitches per inch. 28-count linen stitched over two also gives 14 stitches per inch. Higher counts make the finished design smaller; lower counts make it larger.
FAQ
Is fabric count stitches per inch?
For Aida, yes: 14 count Aida is usually 14 stitches per inch when stitched over one square. For linen and evenweave, divide the fabric thread count by the number of threads crossed.
How much extra fabric do I need?
A 2 to 3 inch border on each side is common. Use more if you need room for a hoop, Q-snap, scroll frame, lacing, or a generous framing margin.
Why is 28-count linen over two the same size as 14-count Aida?
Because each stitch crosses two linen threads. 28 ÷ 2 = 14 effective stitches per inch, so the stitched design size matches 14-count Aida.
