Capacitor Code Converter

Convert capacitor markings like 104, 473, 102, and 4R7 into picofarads, nanofarads, and microfarads. You can also enter a capacitance value and get the nearest common 3-digit capacitor code.

Convert a capacitor code or value

Start with the code printed on the part, or switch to value mode to convert pF, nF, and µF back into a common marking.

Main result 104 = 100 nF = 0.1 µF

104 means 10 followed by 4 zeros in picofarads.

Picofarads 100,000 pF
Nanofarads 100 nF
Microfarads 0.1 µF
Nearest common code104
ToleranceK = ±10%
Typical label styleCeramic capacitor code

A capacitor marked 104K is commonly read as 100 nF, 0.1 µF, with ±10% tolerance.

How to read a capacitor code

For a standard three-digit ceramic capacitor code, read the first two digits as the base number and the third digit as the number of zeros to add in picofarads.

Example: 104 = 10 + four zeros = 100,000 pF = 100 nF = 0.1 µF.

What about R codes?

Small values sometimes use R as the decimal point in picofarads. For example, 4R7 means 4.7 pF and R22 means 0.22 pF.

Letters after the number usually show tolerance, such as J for ±5%, K for ±10%, and M for ±20%.

These are common markings found on ceramic capacitors and small film capacitors. Always check the datasheet or part series when voltage, dielectric, or safety rating matters.

Capacitor code FAQ

Is 104 the same as 0.1 µF?

Yes. Code 104 is 100,000 pF, which is 100 nF or 0.1 µF. It is one of the most common ceramic capacitor markings.

How many nF is code 473?

473 is 47,000 pF, which equals 47 nF or 0.047 µF.

What does the K mean in 104K?

K usually means ±10% tolerance. So 104K is a 0.1 µF capacitor with a typical tolerance of plus or minus 10%.

Does the capacitor code include voltage?

Not usually in the three-digit capacitance code. Voltage may be printed separately, included in a longer manufacturer code, or only shown in the datasheet.
